If you’re reading this, I’m going to take some liberty to guess you are a creative or a writer—or at least, you want to be. As I shared in this post, the only difference between writers and those who want to write is simply… writing. Sitting down and getting some words on paper. That’s it.
Today I want to encourage you that not only are you a writer, and not only do your words have power, and not only are there people out there who need to read your writing, and not only is your gift needed in the world… but there is immense value in you starting a good ‘ole fashioned blog.
I believe there are many good reasons to go down this path, and we will get to them below, but as you read, I really want you to consider this for yourself. Don’t believe the lie this isn’t for you, that I’m writing to someone else, or that you couldn’t possibly figure this out. I believe in you and what God could do through your efforts.
I hope these words brew hope and excitement in you, stirring up long-held dreams and possibilities within your soul. Here are the top reasons I think you (yes, YOU!) should start a blog.
001. Blogs are a great place to start sharing your writing with others.
If you have been on the fence about sharing your words with others but know deep down you are a writer, a blog is the perfect place to start. You get to control outputs, and in the beginning, who you share your posts with. You could go a whole year of publishing your work without telling a soul, but it would be adding drops in the bucket of your brand. Now, I would recommend sharing your work at least with friends, family, or fellow writers, and this is a safe place to start. Think about it—when the people in your life start a new project or venture, do you criticize them, or celebrate with them? I have a hunch people in your life will be excited to cheer you on and watch you soar.
002. Blogs aren’t dead.
I really, truly believe this. I’ve seen so many blogs thrive in the past few years. In fact, I’m noticing the start of a blog resurgence right now in my online sphere. The blogging community is still vibrant and thriving, and it’s never too late to throw your own creation in the mix. There is room for you at the table.
003. Blogs are more sustainable than social platforms.
Substack, Instagram, TikTok—they’re amazing tools. But they’re also rented space. If those platforms disappeared tomorrow, so would your content. A blog, on the other hand, is a home you own. It gives you creative freedom, long-term control, and peace of mind.
004. Setting up a blog is way easier than you think.
The barrier to entry here is seriously so low. The technical side of things is super easy with user-friendly sites like Squarespace, and the creative side of things is simple, too. If your biggest hesitation to stepping into the blog world is the technical, backend stuff, let me assure you this doesn’t need to hold you back anymore. With Google, YouTube, and ChatGPT at hand to answer questions and troubleshoot, I really believe you can master this medium.
005. Starting a blog doesn’t have to be a ginormous undertaking.
You get to call the shots here. Just because you start a blog doesn’t mean you have to post something every single day. Take the pressure off yourself! This can be whatever you want it to be. If publishing an essay once a month feels realistic and comfortable, amazing! That’s a beautiful cadence. You are in charge of what works for you—there’s no pressure to do this full-time. Don’t compare yourself to creators with millions of followers who do it for a living. Comparison can quickly kill the joy and fruit of creating something you love.
006. If you have ambitions of writing a book someday, a blog is an essential step in the process.
I stand by my original statement that there is no pressure to publish something every day on your blog. But if you think writing a book is a possibility for you, consistently publishing your writing somewhere shows publishers you are dedicated and willing to put in the work. And that you are already writing and have started cultivating an audience. I can also promise you there is no feeling in the world like showing up for yourself over and over again (even if it’s one post per month). Looking back to see what you’ve built is pretty spectacular. And the powers that be in the publishing world will think so, too.
007. I think you will have fun.
A creative outlet that you get to shape into whatever you want is so fun. Building something that’s not associated with your daily work or responsibilities is a BLAST. Cultivating your own space to dream and create is fulfilling on one of the deepest levels. Even if you don’t have long term goals to write a book or turn blogging into your career, I think you will enjoy the process of creating a space to express your ideas and work.
008. People need to hear your words.
There are ideas and messages inside of you that other people need to hear. Don’t hold out on them. The rule of thumb I’ve always heard and lived by is that if even one person is impacted by your work, you’ve done your job. And it’s all worth it. The goal is not a large following or building an empire. It’s serving the people in your audience—whether that’s five people or five million people. Don’t let numbers or followers discourage or deter you. You have the gift of writing for a reason, and you will encourage and inspire the people the Lord has put in your path. Your words are needed.
009. There are people who want to help you.
It’s true. There are people who want to see you use your gifts and step into your calling. I’m at the front of the line. Truly—I would love to support you. Some of the best growth from my blog and creativity has come when I’ve let creative mentors speak into my ideas, ask me good questions, and help me realize that I’m not, in fact, stuck or behind. I would be honored to do that for you. I’m now officially opening the doors for creative coaching sessions. In our one-hour call together, we will craft a clear, actionable game plan that sets you and your creative goals up for success. You’ll share where you’re at, where you want to be, and from there we’ll work backwards so you can make those dreams a reality.
Let’s Launch Your Blog Together
If you’re ready to get going and a creative coaching session excites you, I am here to help! I can confidently say my website, writing, and creative efforts wouldn’t be close to where they are today without investing time and $$ into learning from those who’ve gone before me. I would love nothing more than to watch your writing launch into the world! You can learn more about working together here.
Above all, I hope this post encourages you that you don’t need anyone’s permission to start acting on your gifts. Dabbling in the world of blogging doesn’t mean you’re leaving your full-time job. You are capable, competent, and uniquely qualified to write the words on your heart. I know I would love to read them. Please, please, please drop a link to your blog if/when you share your first post! I would LOVE to see. Cheering you on always. xo
