I have numerous friends who are “closeted writers,” as I lovingly call them. They have a true gift and the desire to write, but they don’t always know exactly what/when/where/how to turn it into a streamlined path forward.
I get it. There are so many ways to share your writing in this day and age, plus an obscene amount of ways to strategize this and that—but today, I want to share the two words that have changed the game in my writing life.
Just start.
Just start writing. Just start brainstorming. Just start grabbing ideas on paper as they come to your mind. Just start giving 15 minutes here, 7 minutes there, 42 minutes later—it all adds up. Just start taking steps forward, no matter how big or tiny. The way you win this race—do the dang thing, make your dream a reality—is by taking tiny steps in the right direction. The rest will come. The learnings, insights, and strategies will follow. But nothing beats doing the hard work and watching your efforts stack into something beautiful.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—the biggest difference between writers and those who want to write is simply… writing. Picking up the pen. That’s all. I’ve seen time and time again in my own creative journey that I don’t need a full weekend or even a full day to make progress. Any time I have to give is enough.
15 minutes at my desk before the work day starts.
30 minutes after dinner.
10 minutes while I wait for Mitch to get ready before we watch a show.
The waiting room at the doctor’s office or car dealership.
There are plenty of pockets in my day to make something happen. I always carry a journal with me for that very reason—I never know when the next great idea or hmm-that’s-interesting thought will strike.
This past year, I’ve worked a full-time job (the most demanding job of my career to date), and somehow made the most progress in the history of my blog and creative life. I believe this is thanks to the creative coaching that’s changed the game for me, paired with a willingness to just start. To lean in. To do the things that get me to the next stepping stone, not waiting for a completely free weekend or a wide open spot on my calendar.
It’s not luxurious. It’s not dreamy 24/7. It’s not always fun. But it is always worth it, and I believe you will think so, too. I believe you will love the feeling of following through. Of showing up for yourself. Of seeing your dreams + ideas through to the end. The way to get there is easier than we often think—just start. xo
