_______
LONGING / RELIEVED
I need the songs
That remind me
of the desert,
While reminding me
I’m safe where I am
And there’s nowhere else
I’d rather be.
_______
THE FIRST
October
Oh, October
It feels right
That we’re sitting here
The light bulbs
And reflections
On the pavement
Sparkling and accentuating
The dips and bends
Of the concrete keeping us afloat.
As I sit in this nook,
This refuge from the storm,
I just have to say:
For once,
I’m glad you’re here.
And in this greeting,
This soft, grey, and gentle hello,
I can’t help but think
Of all that’s changed
Since I saw you last.
Maybe this year,
I’ll venture out from your refuge
And onto the launch pad
Toward things to come,
Just as soft, grey, and gentle
As you.
_______
TODAY’S LIGHT
As you drive down Mockingbird Lane
And the sun shines
Between the branches
Above the two-lane road,
As you admire the beauty
Of the nostalgic song
Playing on,
I pray you acknowledge
The beauty
Of this present moment
And the light
That’s in your midst
Today.
