I’ve wrestled with depression most of my life. One of the things I’ve learned along the way is that coming out of a dark season is like waking up from a long nap—that half-awake, half-rested, and completely woozy feeling. It’s like the first step out of a bitterly cold, numb winter and into the crisp, fresh spring air.
The awakening is realizing—slowly, and then all at once—that there are things to create. Things to try. Recipes to make. Outfits to wear—and style, plan, and shop for. There are walks to take, places to visit, friends to laugh with, stories to tell, words to write, new songs to love, mornings to savor, cappuccinos to sip, flowers to arrange, gardens to tend to, weddings to dance your heart out at, books to read, plants to water, shows to watch, morning snuggles to share, hugs to give, emojis to discover, rooms to decorate, meals to pour yourself into, scrapbooks to document, photos to snap, and new memories to make.
After so long of feeling like nothing will ever change, the awakening is realizing there is more. It’s an instant of hope restored, and realizing there are so many reasons to hope beyond the current moment or season.
If you can’t believe any of this goodness is coming for you, know that I’m believing it for you. And I’ll see you in the sunshine on the other side. xo
