A while ago, I had a lifegiving, soul-refreshing conversation with my mentor/big sister/there’s-not-a-category-for-our-relationship, Alyssa. It was the kind of conversation where my soul felt hugged afterward, even though we were hundreds of miles apart. Praise God for Alexander Graham Bell.
We talked about all kinds of things, but what stuck with me this time wasn’t a new or groundbreaking concept. It was something Alyssa and I have talked about for the better part of four years.
At one point she said, “There’s a danger of constantly looking ahead to the next season and daydreaming about it 24/7, and then once we get there, looking back on the last season with such fondness that we’re not even present in the season we used to dream about.”
This hit me hard—because it’s so real! If we’re only looking back or looking ahead, are we ever looking down where our feet are, in the current season God’s given us? Waiting for the next season can feel excruciating at times. I realize that’s an understatement. Especially in a season of suffering. I have a feeling many of us could also be professional romanticizers of the past.
The present moment is really all we have. The present moment is where we connect with ourselves, God, and others. It’s where we make intentional decisions, live out our goals and callings, and honestly just enjoy life.
So how, exactly, do we do this? How do we not only stay present but actually live into joy and freedom? How do we truly live with passion, zeal, and abundance?
It can feel like a lofty concept, but I’d argue it’s a lot simpler than we sometimes make it. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite ways to find wild purpose, passion, and joy in any old, mundane day—no matter my circumstances, symptoms, or season.
There’s no pressure to do all of these things in a day, week, or month—or at all. But I do believe choosing even one of these things (or one of your own) can help us live a little more intentionally, presently, and ultimately, abundantly.
