Creativity, On Writing

Creativity, On Writing

One of my best friends has recently started exploring her God-given passion to write. It’s been the best, most unexpected and thrilling delight in our friendship. A writing friend! Someone to talk through this wonderful, sometimes murky, sometimes intoxicating world of creativity with! Historically, when I’ve talked about my writing with friends, it hasn’t gotten as in the weeds as this conversation.

When she asked me what advice I had on where to start as a writer (I was so honored!), these tidbits came to mind, and I thought I’d share with you, too. If you don’t consider yourself a writer but have a friend or sibling or cousin or mother or daughter or hairdresser who does, maybe you could consider yourself a sharer of encouragement. Your message could spur them on in their creative journey, and as a writer and creative soul, know that’s always appreciated!

001. Don’t shy away from it.

Absolutely nurture your desire to write, because it is from the Lord. Not everyone feels compelled or curious about it. He put it uniquely in you, so don’t discount it!

002. Just start.

There is really no magic formula for writing other than… sitting down and writing. I would encourage you at this exploratory phase to truly write whatever comes to mind and whatever is on your heart. Over time you will notice passions, patterns, and even the ways it comes out—poetry, essays, short stories, prose, etc. But in the beginning, truly let all of it flow out!

003. Use the time you have.

One of my favorite writers (Julia Cameron) says “We often crave long, uninterrupted time to write, but when does that ever really happen? Writing usually happens in 20 minute bursts.” I would say not to let your inner-critic talk you out of writing because you don’t have four hours or a full day to do it. Just give it even 15 minutes a day and you’ll be amazed how many words that adds up to over time.

004. Ideas will flow.

When you start writing, more ideas will flood out—when you’re driving, when you’re walking, when you’re grocery shopping, etc. There’s something about starting to write that unlocks the floodgates of ideas. An object in motion stays in motion.

005. Get it all down.

Finally, an encouragement that nothing you want to write about is too small, silly, or basic. God put these specific inclinations in your heart on purpose and you will put your own spin on them that no one else can.
